being "beheaded" at this time. In the absence of Martin Luther King or some other charismatic figure to lead us, she insisted that we must all take up the challenge. She called for the radical integration of faith and praxis, not a fetal believing, but an adult acting out of the oppression born by women alienated from their gods. Enumerating problems specific to black women, Canon spoke of increasing discrimination, locked-in poverty and the complete denial of lesbianism within the black community itself. She concluded with a plea for heart-to-heart commitment between women of all races amid their cultural differences even where recognition of truth. really hurts.

Issues raised by participants of the Institute, but not resolved, include the problem of discovering religious language broad enough to encompass Jewish and Christian concepts (Judith Plaskow objected, for example, to the suggestion that the In-

stitute was like a baby now born, but needing to be "baptized."), the difficulty of interesting many minority women in feminist consciousness, and the need to act as advocates for other women, especially our lesbian sisters.

The highlight of the weekend was the Saturday morning presentation by Rabbi Lynn Gottlieb of the ancient story of Dinah. Dressed in leotards, a white gown and a tunic of many colors, Lynn retold the story of the plight of the solitary sister of the brothers who founded the twelve tribes of Israel and of her quest for freedom, authenticity and wisdom among the women of the land. The presentation was a combination of simple dance movements, hand gestures and plain chant which created a solidarity in experienced reality to heal, at least for the duration of the meeting, the alienation and tension felt among women of such great diversity of color, status, culture and religion.

change. They present demands and request yes or no answers in a public forum so that all members can see the victories.

Take Back the Night in Cleveland is trying to use some of these same strategies in their fight against violence against women. They've chosen safety as an issue that will bring a lot of women together. Lack of safety on RTA gives a specific focus to our anger and feelings of powerlessness. Women who might not attend a CR group will support an issue that directly affects their lives. The process of winning, even on small issues, will raise our consciousness along the way. We are learning by doing.

There are lots of other possibilities. What if the 90,000 people who marched for ERA in Chicago last April broke into groups of 1000 and visited reac-

tionary Illinois legislators at their homes? What if they said, "We are your constituents. We demand that you represent us, and we will keep coming back until you do”?

It is time for us to join with other groups on common issues. Are high utility bills, interest rates, and lack of jobs feminist issues? Single women head 15 percent of all households in the U.S. Their average income is $8,540 per year, which is half the $17,640 median family income in the U.S. These issues affect all women and are the result of male and class oppression. We cannot afford to ignore the neighborhood women's call for joint action.

When American is reclaimed, women will be in the Icad.
